Paris-based Marie-Christine
Pavone produces jewellery made from Galalith. This material was
discovered by two German scientists who solidified milk casein by adding
small amounts of formaldehyde. Galalith is a combination of 'gala',
Greek for milk and 'lithos', Greek for stone. Galalith pre-dates
bakelite and was originally used to make everyday items such as buttons
and buckles. It accepts colour readily and produces a high gloss finish.
